COMMITTEES

EMUFT is a member-driven organization. This means that unlike many other unions, EMUFT is not a professionalized union. Instead  we all are the union. All of our voices are important to ensure the best working conditions and a thriving community of educators.
One way to make your voice heard is by joining a committee or subcommittee.
Your input is needed! Your insights and opinions matter! We all have unique skills, talents, ideas and experiences. By sharing these with your community through a committee, you can make a real difference!

To express your interest and join a committee, contact emuft9102@gmail.com
Communication Committee
The Communications Committee develops procedures and plans for effectively communicating the Union's goals, values, activities, and achievements both to the Union membership and the wider community.
Projects:
  • Communicate important contract dates and elements through "Get to Know your Contract"
  • Engage and orient new lecturers with the information and resources they need when they start teaching at EMU with our "Digital Welcome Basket"
  • Ensuring that members are kept in the loop through various channels of communication (Emails, Facebook, Twitter)
organizing committee
Member organizing is one of the keys to being a powerful force for positive change on campus. The more of us get involved, the more diverse and powerful  our voice will become. As such, the Organizing Committee develops and oversees the education, training, and mobilization of members.
Projects:
  • Conversations with new lecturers
  • Tracking of the engagement of membership
  • Identifying leaders and engaging them
  • Encourage member participation in training opportunities through AFT Michigan or other external opportunities (e.g. New Deal for Higher Education or Organizing for Power)
grievance committee
The Grievance Committee works with the Stewards in the resolution of contractual and non-contractual disputes in the workplace, maintains records of grievances and their disposition, is responsible for responding to and resolving grievances and disputes beyond the immediate work location, and makes recommendation to the Union Council regarding disputes to be taken to arbitration or civil remedy.
Projects:
  • Supporting members through the grievance process
  • Ensuring member understanding of their contract
bargaining Committee
Bargaining CommitteeThe Bargaining Committee oversees the development of a bargaining platform and engages in collective bargaining. While this committee is arguably one of the more labor intensive - certainly in terms of emotional investment during bargaining - there are many ways to be engaged. The more people join the team, the more manageable the individual work pieces.
Do you have a talent to analyze budget sheets? Are you a public health care professional? Do you have an analytical mind? What about your ability to debate or solve conflict? These and many more skills are needed on the bargaining team.
Subcommittees:
  • Bargaining Roadmap Committee - This subcommittee explores various contractual elements in preparation of collective bargaining
  • Campaign Action Committee - This subcommittee plans campaign and escalation actions during bargaining
Social Justice committee
The Social Justice Committee is brought together by a collective goal of increasing social responsibility and awareness of social justice issues impacting EMUFT members within the wider EMU campus community.
Projects:
  • Support members who have faced discrimination
  • Help create campus wide awareness of the realities that minorities face daily and a culture of inclusion
  • Work with local organizations and student groups to advance the causes of social justice
  • Work towards helping create university wide policies that encourage diversity and are welcoming to all people
  • Serve as an ally to students that express experiencing cultural-related discrimination/injustice
elections committee
The Election Committee shepherds the membership through the process of our annual election of Union officers by making election announcements, calling for nominations, implementing the election via the chosen platform, and verifying/certifying the election results.
Projects:
  • Union officers election in April
EMUFT Lecturer distinguished teaching award committee

  • Bolster awareness of the awards among the EMU community
  • Encourage Lecturer nomination and application

  • Review Lecturer nomination packages and applications
