Amy BearingerTitle: Full-Time Lecturer, School of Communication, Media & Theater Arts
Years @ EMU: Teaching in some capacity (graduate assistant, part-time, full-time) since 2005. Why Did You Become an Educator? I’ve always embraced the idea of life-long learning, and teaching certainly supports that effort. I also find it rewarding to teach courses which have a direct impact on student’s professional, personal and/or academic lives. Communication competence is key in so many aspects of life, and it’s important to cultivate that understanding (and the motivation to adapt and improve) in humans who want to leave us and have an impact on the world. Favorite Class You Teach @ EMU: Gender Communication. What Is Something You Enjoy About EMU? I like the energy, support, and passion that you can identify in the small pieces that make up the whole. The specific departments, student groups, outstanding colleagues, etc. are what make the difference. What Do You Do Outside of EMU? I teach an occasional course at Washtenaw Community College. I also spend lots of time with family! Surprising Facts About You: Both of my parents are EMU grads / When I was younger, I dreamed of being the next Lois Lane / I’m a big Indy Car fan / Although I cover nonverbal communication in every single class I teach, I’ve never actually taught the nonverbal course. |
